Bearded man with sunglasses on head and blue jacket holds survey gear and stands in front of river

“So many of my favorite memories have been on a river, and this job gives me a chance to protect and restore these resources for future generations.” — Sam

Sam Box, EIT | Staff Engineer and Geomorphologist

Sam joined the Rio ASE team immediately following his graduate research in fluvial geomorphology at the University of Montana. He has focused on hydraulics, hydrology, geomorphic change, sediment transport, and analyses of altered channel behavior. Along with his experience in geomorphology, he is an engineer-in-training. With a background in engineering, he is proficient with programs such as ArcGIS, AutoCAD Civil 3D, HEC-RAS, and Nays2DH. Sam can support projects in a variety of capacities, using experience with both engineering and geomorphology. Sam provides services such as field data collection, surveying, project design, and construction observation. Sam’s technical approach focuses on solving complex problems with an eye towards the big picture. By doing so, he can develop solutions that accomplish project objectives in a cost-effective and sustainable manner.

When he isn’t in the office, you can find Sam on one of the many rivers around Boise. As an avid kayaker, Sam is almost always on a river, near a river, or thinking about rivers. From the steep creeks of Glacier National Park to the large rivers of Patagonia, the many rivers that Sam has explored have given him a profound appreciation for river processes, which has in turn informed his understanding and passion for working with rivers.
